ReclaimYourGame.com has launched a massive interview with StarForce
The ReclaimYourGame.com (http://reclaimyourgame.com/) is well known for its tough position towards copy protection and DRM measures, interviewed Dmitry Guseff, StarForce’s Marketing Director Deputy.
A large number of sharp questions concerning StarForce’s new solutions, the company’s attitude towards modern DRM issues and new consumer friendly measures have been answered. The whole interview has been divided into 4 parts:
- RYG Interviews StarForce
- RYG/StarForce Q&A - Part 1
- RYG/StarForce Q&A - Part 2
- RYG/StarForce Q&A - Part 3
Now RYG’s staff will run a round of tests to investigate StarForce’s products for its safeness for gamers and reliability for copyright owners. Testing results will be published on ReclaimYourGame.com once the work is completed.
"We're in the process of compiling our short-list of StarForce testers," said Lisa (Calipip4), a representative of ReclaimYourGame.com. "Dmitry's fresh confidence in StarForce's DRM for its end-user friendliness has certainly piqued our interests and, as such, we're both grateful and determined to examine the DRM with independent eyes. Hopefully we can provide an unbiased assessment and reveal an end-user's perspective on the mechanics of StarForce's new DRM. In the meantime, the discussions with StarForce are ongoing on our public forums. The invitation is open to all provided they adhere to the usual forum guidelines."
Sblade, the technical director of RYG’s StarForce testing group had this to add:
"First I have to say is... StarForce isn’t StarForce anymore. At least not the StarForce we knew. Current version StarForce V5.5 is VERY different from the old StarForce. It is so different that we can even say it isn’t the same software anymore. I was very surprised and pleased how user-friendly SF Proactive was during the tests I did in some nasty environments (debuggers, ripping programs etc). StarForce seems only to blacklist harder debuggers, and allows the "low risk" ones."
"Aside from the technical stuff, it was very pleasant and fool proof with how the GUI guides the user to activate/deactivate the application. And it was very pleasant to see that advanced users will be able to see that the registry entries are deletable. This is one of the main causes of opposition to DRMs. Users should say what can be and what cannot be in their computers and not jump through hoops to remove the traces of DRMs.
"So far I’m satisfied with the Proactive tests and I’ll be leading the user tests so that we can have 100% transparency."
About ReclaimYourGame.com
Reclaim Your Game (RYG) works as an advocacy group for [PC] Gamers and their rights, particularly against publishers intending to use invasive DRM techniques and products. With its humble origins formed by concerned "Simmers against SecuROM" RYG quickly expanded into areas of PC maintenance for gamers. Many of RYG's tutorials as well as their resources on several of the key DRM players, such as ByteShield and StarForce, are kept and discussed on RYG's Forum, The PRISM.
As of late RYG has been in constant touch with two DRM companies, ByteShield and, more recently, StarForce, through both interviews, testing as well as further discussions on how to improve their products to ensure gamers are not adversely affected by their DRM technologies. Currently, RYG continues to expand with a team of dedicated volunteers assisting in areas of general technical support to the editorial section where RYG regularly publishes current trends in both gaming as well as DRM. Game reviews are done as our members have the time and money.
In the future RYG hopes to build bridges and contacts with gaming developers and publishers with the key focus of education and awareness of good DRM practices.
